So, you’ve heard that writing blog posts/content for your website will help you rank higher on search engines… If you haven’t, well you’ve now learnt something! But the problem we hear time and time again is that you just don’t know what to write about.
We get it, especially when you have an e-commerce website, how do you find what to write about when you are just making and selling products?
Well, here is a simple process that will help you find both what to write about and how you can write it.
Before I go any further, the first and most important thing is to consider where you are starting from. People don’t often read content because they want to be sold something, rather they read content to become informed on a subject, or to answer a question. So when we are producing content, it is best to start by providing value and teaching those who are reading your content.
People buy from who they trust, so once people start reading your content and you answer the questions that they have about your products, then you will slowly begin to gain trust, and people will feel happier to purchase from you.
We live in the digital age, and information is easy to come across, so now is the best time to start. But what do you start with?
If you have been in business for any length of time, no doubt you have received countless questions about your products and services, and no doubt you spend countless hours answering these questions. How much easier would it be if you had a base of content to send directly to those asking questions, how much time would you save every single day?
Marcus Sheridan says that you should write a list of every single question that your customers have asked you, no matter how obscure. Why? Because if they have asked you then how many other people have thought the same question and not asked you?
Once you have the list, start with the question you have been asked the most, and write an article answering that question as thoroughly as you can. Leave nothing unsaid, the more honest and transparent you are the more the reader will begin to trust you.
It is no good that if you have all these articles published and you don’t use them. So when a customer asks you a question, send them the article. Use the content in your marketing, on relevant pages, on social media... put it everywhere that your customers live so that they get to read and consume the content that you create.
It is much more beneficial to have content out there being used with little imperfections than you agonising over every single paragraph making sure it is perfect, and never actually publishing it.
The chances are that the more you write and the more you create content, the better your writing will be. Anyway, the content you publish is not permanent, you can always go back and edit it and change it when your skills improve.
Once you write your first few you may run out of steam, but don't stop. The more you write, the more questions you answer, the more you will gain your customers' trust.
Studies have shown people spend more than 2.6X more time on websites with video on it than those without it, so why not add a video about the question as well as write the content? If you’re nervous about being on video, why not do a voice over a screen recording?
Remember the first tip, just publish content, create the videos, and eventually, you will get over your fear and your customers will thank you for it.
